beyond the boots: getting to know the blogger
I grew up in rural Illinois on a small dairy goat farm. My family was not the traditional "farmer". My dad worked as a teacher, now a principal and my mom an accountant. Most of the income was not from the farm, but the job my parents worked. So, I guess you could say I not a "real" farmer, but I am transplant to the agriculture community. This "transplant" got his start in agriculture with goats, and since then he has loved the industry ever since! I grew up in the 4-H program, and that is where most of my experience comes from. I was in FFA in high school, and now working with them as a National Collegiate Agriculture Ambassador.
My involvement in agriculture has lead me to Iowa State University to major in Agricultural Communications with minors in Agricultural Business and Agronomy. Agricultural Communications is a hot field in the industry right now because of the growing need for more communication between consumers and farmers. My ultimate goal in agriculture is to help people understand the industry better as well as be better educated about it. Agricultural Communications is a very broad field, and is panning out to be a great a fast paced career in the future.
I love goats. A LOT. Growing up, my summers revolved around my dairy goat project. I cared for them, milked them, showed them, and most importantly, learned from them. There are some things that can not be taught in a classroom, and hard work and finding a passion for something is one of them. Through 4-H and FFA, I was able to develop my passion. In developing my passion, I also had some success. Three American Dairy Goat Association National Champions in two different breeds (2 Lamanchas and a Sable) seems successful, however I understand there is still a lot of work to be done with my goats. Goats have always been my life, and will continue to be as I grow up. I will always be learning and understanding my goats, even when I have seemed to have reached the top of the goat showing world.
My life is a blank slate, and I am filling that slate with knowledge. My goal in this blog is to share my experiences with others, and let people know what I have done, so hopefully they will help understand the what is happening in agriculture. So sit back and watch my adventures in agriculture unfold!
